AFP — European Parliament head fears ‘social explosion’

European Parliament president Martin Schulz warned on Saturday that Spain’s economic crisis could spark a “social explosion” across the continent.
“The demonstrations in Spain show that a social explosion is looming because of the high unemployment rate among young people in Europe,” Schulz told the wide-circulation German daily Bild in an interview published on Saturday.
He called for the rapid implementation of “new European programmes to finally create more jobs for this generation.”

Anyone else getting the gut feeling that the wheels are coming off?

What I would like to know is why there hasn't been a social explosion yet. What does it take.

It will take coverage like Slate's F**KED: The United States of Unemployment to occur in the NYT and the WaPo, and CNBC and CNN for that to happen.

Job Guarantee or Mob Guarantee.

Where have those perfectly rational agents gotten off to, anyway?

Actually, there is, Dan. It's just under-reported in the US MSM.Things have died down a bit in the US as Occupy consolidates and strategizes. It is now obvious that TPTB will not hesitate to use severe repression to put down any serious show of opposition in the streets.

We are already in the fascistic stage from the side of the ruling elite and the positive side of that is that they have showed their hand. They are congratulating themselves on having dealt with the issue decisively, but that self-congratulation is premature. It just marks a transition to a new strategy on the part of the opposition that will avoid pitched battles other than to remind the world that America is controlled by fascists. This is severely damaging, although it may not be obvious yet.

America's image was already badly tarnished due to its callous treatment of people abroad. Now it is obvious that the elite are willing to repress their own countries youth violently too. Few still believe in the Statue of LiIberty as a symbol anymore.

Moreover, we are still in the early stages of this global transformation from contemporary neoliberalism to ?. If a warrior elite emerges from the right, we will likely get fascism and eventually war. If from the left, it is not clear what direction it would take.

Btw, there is already movement toward a Romney/Petraeus ticket.

Could a Romney/Petraeus Ticket Be a Game Changer?
