Politico — GOP pros fret over Paul Ryan

“I think it’s a very bold choice. And an exciting and interesting pick. It’s going to elevate the campaign into a debate over big ideas. It means Romney-Ryan can run on principles and provide some real direction and vision for the Republican Party. And probably lose. Maybe big,” said former President George W. Bush senior adviser Mark McKinnon.

"They’re worried about inviting Medicare — usually death for Republicans — into the campaign. They’re worried it sidetracks the jobs issue."

Therein also lurks the ghost of the Carter presidency. It's easy to see that by talking about Medicare instead of jobs, the Democrats will scare seniors and deflect attention from Obama's performance. True enough.

But Ryan also highlights why neoclassicals and/or libertarians have become the new Carters. They are in a conceptual box in which they have no choice but to tell Americans they must do with less. That has NEVER been a winner and usually shows up (Cleveland, Hoover, Carter) when a party has no other ideas.

Cardigans anyone?
