That was before Nixon's Southern strategy went into gear led by folks like Kevin Phillips. At the time of LBJ, Southern whites hated Yankees, carpetbaggers, and especially the party of Lincoln more than Blacks. It took some doing to bring them into the GOP fold. Now The GOP has to deal with the consequences.
I recently spoke to a former Dem member of Congress about this stuff...Dan is right, its hard to overstate how the combination of NAFTA/Brady bill screwed the Dems
