BBC News — French far-right 'at gates of power' - PM Manuel Valls

His comments came after an opinion poll showed that FN leader Marine Le Pen would beat incumbent Francois Hollande in presidential elections in 2017.
Not quite what is sounds like. In France, it is highly unlikely that any candidate wins a majority in the first round. The top candidates face off in the second round. Le Pen would beat Hollande in a second-round ballot, but she would best none of the other likely candidates if any of them placed ahead of Hollande in the first round, which is likely given his low favorability.

But it is indicative of the mood in France about the effectiveness of the Left establishment.

If they're at the "gates of power", then by definition, they aren't "far" anything: they're mainstream.

Doh.

If the leftie BBC could give us some coherent criticisms of Le Pen's Front National, then fine. But they can't, so they resort to insults like "far".

Hollande, the "socialist" has turned out to be right-wing and pro-austerity. The French electorate is understandably frustrated.
