Xinhua — Chinese firm to produce solar-powered cars

Hanergy Holding Group Ltd., the world's largest thin-film solar power company, will launch as many as five models of solar-powered cars in October, its chairman announced on Monday.
Hanergy is cooperating with three overseas and two domestic partners on the vehicles, board chairman Li Hejun told a press conference. Hanergy announced in late January that it had acquired Alta Devices, an American competitor, with charging stations for Tesla in Beijing and Shanghai.
The new models will have a range of 80 to 100 km once fully charged, he said.
"There are currently only 400,000 electric cars in the world but the market is expected to hit 10 million by 2020," said Lin.

Aston Martin testing solar panels on their race cars

Aston Martin has teamed up with Hanergy Thin Film Power to test the benefits of using solar panels on their race cars.
The first test was conducted last weekend as the #97 Vantage GTE was equipped with two solar panels on its roof. Aston Martin declined to go into specifics but said the panels can be used to help power auxiliary systems such as the air conditioner which currently consumes power from the engine.

Heating and A/C requirements reduce the range of electric vehicles, so this is a welcome addition. Might still have to use propane as a source of heat for those of us in northern, overcast climes.
