Alexander Mercouris — So did Syriza win a victory?

In my opinion the only realistic way forward is for Syriza to use whatever grace period it has got (and it may turn out to be a lot less than 4 months) to prepare the Greek economy and the Greek people for a default and (since the European authorities in their great unwisdom have decided that a default is incompatible with membership of the Eurozone) for a Grexit.
I hope and pray that Syriza realise this since it seems to me the only way forward. The information I am getting from people in Greece (including my parents) is unrelievedly grim, with people now running out of money to pay for even basic necessities and with the economy essentially at a standstill. Support for Syriza remains exceptionally strong but this cannot continue for much longer.

Agree with the author about the short lived "grace period." I would give Syriza a year, max. If they fail to turn the economy around with a year, there will be rioting in the streets.

When I was a kid, I didn't understand what was meant when they said the fascists made the trains run on time.

Now I understand.

The current Greek government really believe they can save the EU from itself by being terribly reasonable.

It's a common strategy amongst the left to say completely the wrong things in a terribly reasonable language.

And then people are surprised when nothing changes for the better.

Being reasonable and rational and ever so nice to everybody doesn't stop the bridge falling down if it is badly engineered.

The left cannot get anything done, dreams and nice words don't get stuff done when your opponents are fanatics.

Until they get this in heir thick head they will be worse with the can kicking.
