alexrpt — Greece will press ahead for WW2 war reparations from Germany. Ready to seize German assets if no payment is made

Greek PM Alexis Tsipras has accused Germany of using legal tricks to avoid paying Athens billions of dollars in World War 2 reparations. Tsipras says his parliament will look into the matter, but Berlin insists it has already honored its obligations. The reparations amount could reach €269 – €332 billion.
Hard ball? Although fanning the nationalistic fire will ultimately help the right — Golden Dawn.
  • “The crimes carried out by the Nazis are still vivid, and we have a moral obligation to remember what the forces did to the country.” ["Nazi" is a dog whistle in many European countries, much more than in the US.]
  • “We are not giving morality lessons but we will not accept morality lessons either.”
  • “After the reunification of Germany in 1990, the legal and political conditions were created for this issue to be solved. But since then, German governments chose silence, legal tricks and delay.”
  • “And I wonder, because there is a lot of talk at the European level these days about moral issues: is this stance moral?”

I, too, have my reservations about this move. And they are not mainly with the Golden Dawn.

While I understand Syriza's predicament, and even agreeing that additional reparations might be required, its timing is really terrible.

They are feeding neo-Nazis all over the world a reason to cast doubt on the Nazi crimes.

Something like: See? "They" are in a hole, and want to blackmail "us". All that story "they" tell "us" about holocaust, war crimes, atrocities, is just another way "these people" have to swindle the Germans.

And, to make things worse, the stupid Merkel and plenty of Very Serious cretins in the media, academe, and politics have unwittingly fed that myth.
