Miles Kimball — John Stuart Mill: Two Maxims for Liberty

Pretty much sums up the social and political kerfuffles taking place in the US today over when and where the individual and social intersect. Different factions draw the lines differently. This is the case not only with social and political liberalism but also economic liberalism.

It is only in the mind that one can assume an IDentity that is 'different' to all other IDentities. It is only in the mind that one can wish all such identities should come together and cooperate as a society. It is only in the mind that one can assume that society can separate itself from an individual identity, or an individual identity separate itself from society; hence 'separation - the great heresy'. All of this happens in the mind. The home of the dramatic actor, on the stage of the world – then we die!

Man is a little rag-doll, ruled by his ego. Whether you eat fish or caviar, none can tell in the excrement (science might, but it's still excrement).

The Buddha saw all this and figured the best thing he could do was sit down and work out a way to 'get off the wheel'. He didn't advocate separation either. But he did advocate knowing the reality, the universality and beauty of the One Self. Then build a world - without the excrement, the smoke of ego. This is also a possibility …. remote I know; but still possible, and part of the history of the human being. Hence there are people in this world working for peace; advocating for the human heart, with mind free to function as a working partner. Not focused on creating all of the problems shackled to ego, but focused on the myriad solutions because of the joy of experiencing the brilliant energy of Love. At least we could all chill-out a bit, calm down and enjoy being alive! And SMILE!!!!!!!

I think if we want peace on this earth, even heaven on this earth, we are going to have to change. But our solutions have to be real, and social – without both we are walking on one leg; breathing with one lung. So, all of you brilliant ones – how do we solve the problem of ego? Govt. regulations, aerial spraying, JIG?

'People before money and machines' …..
